Asian owners call for UN troops to guard ships

The Asian Shipowners’ Forum has called for a United Nations resolution that would see the international body sponsor and manage armed personnel on board ships sailing through pirate-infested waters.The call, in a statement released by ASF on Wednesday, follows the group’s proposal to Working Group 3 of the Contact Group for Piracy Off Coast of Somalia in Washington on February 28.

The United Nations Security Council expressed grave concern at the threat posed by Somali pirates and extremist groups as UN chief Ban Ki-moon warned the African state's humanitarian situation would likely deteriorate again in the coming months.For the past two decades, Somalia has been engulfed in anarchy, chaos and conflict.
